Hi, all:

For a few years we have had annoyingly intermittent behavior when someone attaches a PNG snapshot that is wider than the forum-standard 800 pixels. There was an experimental tool we were using to automatically shrink larger images, but it did not work consistently.

After *much* horsing around with it, we finally consigned it to the "unreliable" bin, and have replaced it with a simple check of the PNG image size. If the width of the PNG is larger than 800 pixels, then it will post an error message, telling you how to reduce that size using TechSmith Corp's Snagit tool ... a very easy procedure.

You can attach larger images if they are JPG or other formats besides PNG ... but they won't be displayed.

The *reason* for this is that wide images *mess up* the entire thread ... it forces all the posts to be displayed to the full width of that one image, and unless your browser-window is as wide as that image, then you would be forced to pan the horizontal slider back and forth just to read the text of the various posts.

So ...

You are encouraged to post PNG images ... but please reduce them in size. You can reduce the size either by cropping out the unnecessary stuff, or if it all is necessary, then shrink it via Snagit. If the compressed image is too hard to read, then please split it up somehow ... or just attach it as a jpg (not as handy, since it must be downloaded and displayed by the user).

Thanks to JimT, for finally conquering this problem for us!
